On 6th October, 1916, the 4th Middlesex battalion of 63 Brigade, 37th Division, moved into the front line at Souchez near Arras. On 8th October, the day on which Ernest Horley was killed, the enemy was active with their heavy trench mortars, minenwerfers or ‘minnies’ and there were a number of casualties for the battalion. |
